The affordable, stylish scanner for the home

Scanning in style
Just 38mm thick, the extraordinarily slender CanoScan LiDE 25 is the obvious choice for the uncluttered desk. Because of LiDE technology’s tiny appetite for power, it does not require any clumsy power cords - a single USB cable connected to your computer is the only lead you’ll ever need.

Despite its diminutive size, the LiDE 25 is big on resolution. Whether you are scanning documents or photos, the 1200 x 2400dpi¹ and 48 bit colour depth specification accurately reproduces every fine detail and subtle shade. Your pin sharp results will be suitable for enlargements and post-scan image editing.

Straight to PDF
A ‘Scan to PDF’ function scans documents straight to PDF (Portable Document Format), speeding up your work flow and doing away with the need for extra conversion software. A floating palette of PDF pages is created, which can be arranged or ordered at will. Text is automatically embedded in PDF files at time of scanning, allowing editing and searching.

Because not everything you need to scan comes in a convenient size, the LiDE 25 incorporates an innovative double hinged Z-lid. The lid keeps an even pressure on whatever you place on the glass, making it ideal for scanning thick documents, magazines and books - even small packages.

Canon’s QARE Level 3 is your on-board photo print correction system. Dust and scratches are automatically detected and corrected, saving hours of manual retouching. Faded colour, excessive graininess and poor exposure can also be corrected.

Multiple photos in one scan
LiDE 25’s fast and convenient Multi-Photo Mode² creates individual automatically cropped files from a single scan pass of up to 10 separate photos, business cards or other originals. It even de-skews images automatically, saving precious time that would otherwise be spent carefully aligning photos on the glass prior to scanning.

Software supplied includes ArcSoft PhotoStudio image editing and OmniPage SE OCR. To help keep you organised, CanoScan Toolbox sits always-at-the-ready on your desktop, allowing you to customise the three EZ-buttons for common functions, such as copying, scanning direct to e-mail and straight to PDF.

¹ Optical resolution is a measure of maximum hardware sampling resolution, based on the ISO 14473 standard.
² Originals must be rectangular and placed minimum 1cm apart. Deskew feature corrects up to 10 degree slant

Samsung unveils first 32GB DDR3 memory module

Following an announcement back in January, Samsung has finally made good on its promise of delivering the world’s first 32GB DDR3 memory module. The massive RAM unit is made up of 72 4Gb memory chip dies using Samsung’s 50nm class DRAM technology, lined up in rows of nine quad-die packaged 16Gb DDR3s, mounted on each side of the circuit board. Naturally, they are meant for use in server systems rather than regular desktops
According to Samsung, the modules operate at 1.35V and have 20% greater throughput compared to 1.5V DDR3 modules. Its lower power consumption levels are in line with the ongoing trend towards more energy-efficient “green” systems. Samsung believes the development of higher density, low-power components will not only reduce electricity bills and other datacenter costs, but will also increase the overall operational efficiency.

In addition to targeting data centers and servers, Samsung’s 4 gigabit chips will also be used to produce 8GB DIMMs for workstations, desktops and laptops – though the company has yet to announce availability and pricing details.

Most Expensive Laptop

As of now all of the details are very sparse and the technical specifications have not been made fully available. We aren’t even sure what this laptop is made with to give it a cost of $1,000,000, but the exterior looks impressive. You can bet with a price this excessive, the expensive laptop will be a spectacle of precious metals and materials and include more than a couple gemstones.

If you thought your 17” Apple MacBook or Alienware Aurora mALX qualified as an expensive laptop, think again.

In 1982 GriD Systems released the Compass 1100 laptop costing about $10,000 (inflation adjusted $20,200). Even this cost pales in comparison to the reports of a costly laptop that luxury manufacturer Luvaglio London is set to release in the near future by special order the most expensive laptop ever sold, with a price tag of a million dollars.

Acer Aspire One 751h

Processor: 1.33GHz Intel Atom Z520
Memory: 1GB RAM
Storage: 160GB hard drive
Optical Drive: None
Screen: 11.6 inches (1,366x768 native resolution)
Graphics: Integrated Intel GMA 500
Weight: 3 pounds
Dimensions (HWD): 1x11.2x7.8 inches
Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition

The appeal of the new Aspire One 751h is not so much what this netbook adds to Acer's netbook line, although we do like its roomy 11.6-inch screen and new slim design. Rather, the most significant update is what it does away with. Gone is the trademark cramped Aspire One 89-percent-wide keyboard, replaced by a full-width model that's a pleasure to type on.

The Aspire One 751h ($449 in our test configuration) actually feels less bulky than its smaller-screen predecessors, thanks to its slim, inch-thick design. The 10.1-inch-screened Aspire One AOD150, by comparison, is 1.3 inches thick. And the Aspire One 751h is just a tenth of a pound heavier than the AOD150, at three pounds with Acer's six-cell battery. (The unit comes standard with a three-cell battery; the six-cell is an optional upgrade that was factored into the $449 cost of our test unit.) The new case has a slick, two-tone design, with a glossy black exterior and gunmetal silver surrounding the keyboard. White, blue, and red models are available as well. The removable six-cell battery on the unit we reviewed juts out the back of the notebook at a slight downward angle; the standard three-cell battery inserts flush with the case.

The standout design feature on the Aspire One 751h is its bright, colorful 11.6-inch LED-backlit screen. With its 1,366x768 native resolution, this 16-to-9-aspect-ratio screen offers significantly more screen space than the 1,024x576 and 1,024x600 screens found on 10.1-inch netbooks. This equates to more horizontal room for toolbars or multiple windows, and even better, less vertical scrolling. Its expansiveness makes the netbook experience feel much less like a compromise. The only downside of the screen is its glossy surface, which is very reflective.

Also welcome is the full-size keyboard. At just over 10.5 inches wide, and outfitted with full-size Shift, Enter, and Backspace keys and no layout peculiarities, it's a pleasure to type on. The keys are large and flat—a Chiclet design, but with barely any space between the keys—but we found them as comfortable to type on as traditional sculpted keys. Below the keyboard you'll find a touch pad that's small but that supports a wide range of multitouch features.
